Rather than having people gauge the contestants based on what they have to offer, many began making mockery of them. One candidate who attracted the most attention was Paul Mahlatsi.
Biography, Background & Criticism
Mahlatsi hails from Kenhardt in the Northern Cape. He has no known criminal record or history of misconduct and holds a qualification in Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) management from NOSA Training Academy.
He currently works as an Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Officer, a position he took up in March 2024.
Wanting to contribute more to society than just working as a safety officer, Paul showed an interest in politics in 2026. He decided that the best move was to start at the grassroots level, and he subsequently vied for the councillor position for Ward 11 in the Nala Municipality under the banner of the Democratic Alliance (DA).
As is customary with most political parties in South Africa, posters of Paul Mahlatsi were shared across the party’s social media platforms. However, because some social media users did not find his campaign posters appealing, they quickly became the subject of negative attention and online trolling.
The criticism was not necessarily because people believed Paul was unqualified to serve as a councillor. Instead, much of the mockery centred on his physical appearance, with some suggesting that his looks would be a problem.
Paul Mahlatsi’s Response
Paul’s initial response was to lock his Facebook profile after trolls began flooding his social media accounts and targeting him with negative comments.
