The Sad Story of Sergio & Marlene Gomes

The crime rate in South Africa is at an all-time high. Although the police are doing their best, there is still much more that can be done, and significant gaps remain to be closed in order to curb this level of insecurity.
On Friday evening, April 24, 2026, the Gomes family lost their breadwinners, Sergio and Marlene Gomes, in a robbery attack in Mahikeng, North West.
According to multiple unconfirmed reports on social media, six armed robbers launched an attack on Sergio Gomes’s business premises, Totobols Butchery. During the incident, they robbed customers, and in the process, Sergio and Marlene Gomes sustained fatal gunshot injuries. Marlene reportedly died at the scene, while Sergio later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Items stolen by the robbers included cellphones (some reportedly belonging to customers), money, and the couple’s Ford Ranger bakkie, which was used to flee the scene.
