Background & Biography

Tazvi Mhaka, whose real name is Joseph Tazviona Mhaka, hails from Masvingo. He was born on 25 May 1978 (Age 47) at 9:30 a.m. at a mission hospital called Morgenster. Like most families in Masvingo at the time, Tazvi’s family did not belong to the upper or super-rich class.

Tazvi’s childhood was not a smooth ride. He grew up in Muchakata, Masvingo, and was raised by his maternal grandparents, who were prominent businesspeople. Lovers of education, his grandparents enrolled him in school in 1985, where he began Grade 1 at Murambwi Primary School. From a very young age, Tazvi was meticulous, especially in how he dressed.

He enjoyed attention and was often praised for being smart. During school assemblies, he was frequently used as an example of how a student should be well-behaved and properly dressed. His personality did not develop overnight, it was inbuilt from an early age.

At the age of 17, his family’s finances hit rock bottom due to his mother’s illness. As a result, he was forced to drop out of school while in Lower Sixth Form to help fend for the family. His grandparents were already elderly, and their finances had become strained. Things became so difficult that Tazvi and his siblings had to travel from their home to Raffingora, carrying tomatoes for farmers who sold them at Mbare Musika.

The routine was harsh, waking up at 3 a.m., returning by 7 a.m. to prepare for school. The combination of financial pressure and exhaustion eventually forced Tazvi and his siblings to leave school altogether. When his mother found out, she was deeply upset.

Tazvi officially left school in 1996 and entered what he later described as “the education of life”, determined to make enough money to support his family. There were times when there was no food at his grandmother’s house in Mufakose. On such occasions, Tazvi would surprise the family by arriving with groceries.

His sister recalls one particular day when the family had hit rock bottom and had no idea what they would eat for dinner. Unexpectedly, Tazvi came home with groceries and a dozen meat pies from King Pie. Rodney, who was only four years old at the time, had never seen so many pies at once. He was ecstatic and ran outside shouting excitedly:

“UNCLE JOSE VAUYA NEMAPIE AKAWANDA KUNGE DZIMBA DZEKUBUDIRIRO!”

Family

Tazvi is married to Ruby-Rose, and together they are blessed with three children, two daughters and one son.
