3 Step Sounds: Definition, Origin, Pioneer & Elements
What is 3 Step Sounds
The 3 Step Sounds is a sub-house genre that originated from South Africa. The sound is characterized by the use of 3 kicks as opposed to the typical 1 over 4 beat that is associated with Afro Tech/House music. The BPM of the 3 Step Sound varies, depending on its application, but it usually hovers around 125-130/BPM. Just like Afro, Deep and Tech house, 3 Steps utilizes the use of synths, traditional percussions, refined basslines, snare & log drums, and soothing vocals.
Origin & Pioneers of 3 Steps
The 3 Step Sounds originated from South Africa and it was developed and pioneered by Thakzin, real name Thabang Mathebula.
Thakzin introduced the 3 Steps as a way of unifying and bridging the gap between Deep House and Afro house/Tech. Thakzin created 3 Steps by removing one kick from the typical 1 over 4 beat found in Afro Tech. What makes the sound unique is the use of snare drum that emphasizes the log drum and sub bass.
Elements of 3 Steps
3 Steps uses the typical elements found in Afro Tech and house. The sound is also bolstered with African percussions which are usually looped, and a touch of flutes, marimba and brass elements. Snare drum, log drum and sub-bass are also used to spice to sound, depending on the taste and mood of the producer is trying to ignite from the listeners.
Contributing Artists
Although the 3 Step Sounds was created by Thakzin, a lot Afro Tech and house producers are keying into the sound and making significant contributions. Morda Bongz of Black Motion, Oscar Mbo, Heavy-k, Fasto 98, JNR SA (real name Lesego Nkooe Junior) are some of the major contributors to the sound.
