The Story of Obakeng Minyuku
If you know children, you will understand that they can be difficult to keep in one place. This often leads them to play outside their homes and wander into neighbouring yards.
Over the weekend, on Saturday, 24 January 2026, four-year-old Obakeng Minyuku was tragically shot and killed. Obakeng and his friends were playing near a neighbour’s gate when the neighbour allegedly fired a gun, claiming the shooting was an accidental discharge.
The incident occurred in the Chris Hani section of Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria. After being shot, Obakeng was rushed to Temba Clinic, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Arrest
Following the shooting, the woman alleged to have pulled the trigger was arrested on a charge of murder. Police investigations are ongoing.
Some local reports further allege that the woman is a powerful figure in the community and has been pressuring the boy’s mother to withdraw the charges, offering a financial settlement and covering burial costs.
