A teacher has been suspended following a video of her mocking one of her pupils for not bringing a pie to school while other learners did.

Background

On March 9, a teacher at Thembalethu Primary School in George, Western Cape, recorded a video of herself shaming a pupil during lunch break for not buying and participating in a R40 school pie day like the other students.

Not only was she mocking the child, who was clearly embarrassed, but she also made hurtful remarks and later uploaded the video online. In the video, she is heard saying that there is nothing she can do to assist the child because even the child’s parents could not afford to contribute, subtly implying that she, as a teacher, cannot fill that gap.

By doing this, she turned herself into a villain, seemingly failing to consider the current financial situation of the child’s parents, as no parent would want to see their child go to school hungry.

Since the video went viral, the management of Thembalethu Primary School has suspended the teacher, and influencer Mandisa Tshingana has raised over R30,000 for the learner.
