Herbert Wigwe Biography and Profile
Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe (aged 57, 15 August 1966 – 10 February 2024 ) was a successful Nigerian banker, entrepreneur and CEO of Access Bank Holdings Plc. Herbert Wigwe was the GMD/CEO of Access Bank plc, which is ranked one of the Best Nigeria financial institution.
Herbert Wigwe had a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and a Master’s in Banking and Finance from the University College of North Wales, a Master’s in Financial Economics from the University of London and he was a qualified member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
Herbert Wigwe Career
Herbert Wigwe started his career as a management consultant at Coopers & Lybrand, Lagos, later he was qualified as a chattered accountant. Thereafter, he joined GTBank where he rose to become an ED – Executive Director in charge of Institutional Banking.

Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, made a great move, by acquiring a small commercial bank, Access Bank. At that time, the bank was ranked 65th largest out of 89 banks operating in the country.
Access Bank is currently one of the best financial institution in Nigeria, ranking amongst the top 500 global banks. It currently serves over 10 million account holders in Nigeria, UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Herbert Wigwe – Cause of Death
On February 10th 2024, Hebert Wigwe was confirmed dead alongside five other people. Sources said, his Helicopter transporting him crashed around the California-Nevada border in the United States of America.
The United States Government has confirmed all passengers onboard dead. According to sources, the five Passengers include his wife, his son, Abimbola Ogunbanjo – The Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group plc and the pilots.
