Dr. Matthew Lani (age 24) whose real name is Matthew Sanele Zingelwa, is a popular TikTok Influencer, HIV/AIDS Activist, Social Media Medical adviser and Content Creator.

In recent times, Dr. Matthew Lani has become popular in TikTok and other social media platforms including X (formally Twitter), Facebook, Instagram and Thread, by constantly dispensing medical advice to his online followers. He has also appeared severally on Radio broadcast, Television shows, Podcasts, Zoom meetings and several other media platforms as a licensed Medical Professional.

However, Certain questions was raised about his medical qualifications, because he claims to have skipped several school grades and completing his University Medical degree at Wits under five (5) years, and his work experience does not also tally with his age.

Several enquires has been sent to Wits University, Johannesburg to confirm the authenticity that he finished his Medical School there and also the HPCSA (The Health Professions Council of South Africa) to confirm the status of his medical profession.

Wits University, Johannesburg has denied knowing Dr. Matthew Lani, stating that the controversial Tiktok doctor did not graduate from their institution.

Dr. Matthew Lani account states that he obtained a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery MBBS degree from Wits University where he studied from 2014 to 2021. He also states he sells Future Life health products and is a content creator.

Shirona Patel, who is a spokesperson for Wits University said: “It is obliged to set the public record straight after claims made by ‘Dr Matthew Lani’ on various social media platforms.

“Based on the names presented to the institution and the facts on hand, the university cannot find any person who graduated by the name of Matthew Bongani Zingelwa or Sanele Zingelwa in recent years. We request ‘Dr Matthew Lani’ to retract such claims immediately,” she said.

while the Health Professions Council Of South Africa (HPCSA) which is a Statutory Body, Established in Terms of the Health Professions Act and it is Committed to Protecting the Public And Guiding The Professions, has also debunked that there is no such person registered as a health practitioner under them.

The HPCSA (Health Professions Council Of South Africa) has released a statement stating that the name Matthew Zingelwa-Lani is not registered to any health professional under them. They also stated in a press statement that there will be legal action if anyone caught been practicing medicine without being registered.

Priscilla Sekhonyana, who is a spokesperson of HPCSA said: the Health Professions Act requires all professionals to register with the council and keep personal information up to date.

“Practising while not registered with the council is a criminal offence,” she said.
