Cybersecurity – Definitions and Introduction

Cybersecurity can be simply defined as the protection of computer devices and inter-connected systems from unauthorized access and cyber attacks.

Cyber security was introduced in 1987,  the essence of cyber security is to help curb system attacks, malwares, virus and other system threats.

In 1987, various antivirus softwares was released commercially by various organizations some of which includes the Anti4us software and the Flushot Plus.

Types of Cybersercurity

Cybersercurity can be classified into five (5) major types, which includes;

1. Application Security:  Application security is a technical task that involves the fixing, troubleshooting and preventing all security issues within an application.

 2.  Cloud Security: Cloud Security involves the process of protecting cloud computer systems. It helps to protect inter-connected systems, data, applications with the use of advance technologies and applications.

3. Network Security: Network Security involves the process whereby network use, accessibility and data is protected and secured from unauthorized access.

4. Critical Infrastructure Security: Critical Infrastructure Security involves the technical process of protecting inter-connected systems and network to prevent unauthorized access.

5. Internet of Things (IoT) security: Internet of things (IoT) security involves the strategy, policies and guidelines used to safeguard against cyber attacks, and unauthorized access targeted against computer systems that are connected over the internet.

Importance and functions of cyber security

1. It helps to increase Organization productivity and improve stakeholders trust by protecting customers information and other sensitive data.

2. It helps to protect Organizations data, information and network from unauthorized access.

3. It helps to identify Data breach, Information/Identify theft and other Social engineering tactics/attacks.

4. It helps to protect and defend several computer systems and interconnected devices from phishing attacks, spammers, malicious attacks and other cyber attacks.

5. It provides safe end-to-end communications, data information and other information communications by adopting encryption technology.

Principles Of Cybersecurity

The four key principles in Cyber security principles includes;

1.Detect : Detecting involves the process of identifying cyber risk.

2. Respond: It involves responding to detected Cyber risk

3. Protect: Involves adopting several controls to help reduce cyber risk

4. Govern: Involves Policies and Managing cyber risk.
