The Sad Story of Latoya Temilton

Latoya Temilton was a Grade 7 student at Laerskool Queenswood Primary School who tragically drowned at a leadership camp on January 20, 2024.

At the age of 12, Latoya Temilton was declared dead after her body was discovered inside the depth of a pool by another student at the Wag ‘n Bietjie resort.

Background
Laerskool Queenswood Primary School was to organise a leadership camp at Wag ‘n Bietjie resort. The event which was slated for January 20 had attendance from students of the school including Latoya Temilton who was too excited to partake in the program.

As part of the camp’s activities for the day, Latoya Temilton and other learners were taken to the resort pool for some swimming session but due to some negligence, the learners were allegedly left unsupervised, unfortunately leading to Latoya Temilton being drowned.

Latoya Temilton’s body was discovered by a learner while swimming underneath the murky waters, after noticing a body, the said student called for help but it was rather too late.

Negligence
The facility which was hosting Laerskool Queenswood Primary School also hosted two other schools and barely any safety precautions were taken for the many kids.

Denials
The management of Laerskool Queenswood Primary School was said to initially lie about the situation of Letoya to her family, saying that she had hit her head on the pool’s edge. Further probe to the school management revealed the true situation of things.

Call For Justice & Investigation
Latoya Temilton’s family are requesting a probe into the unfortunate situation. Already, the Gauteng education MEC Matome Chiloane has given Nchupetsang Inc Attorneys 7 days to complete its investigation into the drowning of Latoya Temilton.

Nchupetsang Inc Attorneys will interview workers at the facility, inspect the scene and review CCTV footage. They are to give a detailed report of their investigation within 7-days.
