If there’s one thing we know about African Parents, it is the fact that they use all available tools in their possession to push their uprightness. A short documentary published by SABC News has been shared by parents in Mzansi to their wards and it has everybody talking.

Hubbly Bubbly Documentary Video
On the 7th of January 2024, SABC News released a documentary video tagged “Hubbly bubbly deemed a silent killer.” The video which was shared across social media platforms and WhatsApp messenger was compiled and investigated by Sellwane Khakhau and video journalist, Jabu Oa Afrika. They interviewed a practicing and licensed medical doctor and a survival of Hubbly bubbly.

What is Hubbly bubbly?
Hubbly Bubbly which is popularly known as hookah or shisha, is a water pipe used for smoking flavored tobacco. Originating from the Middle East, this practiced has penetrated several countries including South Africa, where it’s been consumed heavily in clubs and other grooving places. Users of Hubbly Bubbly inhale a heated flavoured smoke through a hose connected to the Hubbly pot.

Side Effects & medical Implications of Hubbly
According to Dr Norman Mabote who is the managing director of Mafikeng Hospital, Hubbly Bubbly causes different kind of cancers and when consumed in a longer period, it pose more threat than cigarette.

Dr Norman Mabote revealed that Hubbly caused oral and respiratory problems. It also affect the heart, lungs and bladder due to the increase intake of Carbon monoxide.

The specialist doctor revealed that Hubbly bubbly users who uses it for a long time get health compilation and most usually end up being admitted in the hospital because of the chronic airway disease developed why taking Hubbly Bubbly. Dr Norman Mabote revealed that most patients when admitted into the hospital cannot breath properly because the airways have been damaged by the constant use of carbon monoxide and the tar found in hubbly.

Survivor Testimony
A survivor of Hubbly bubbly, Bakang Rankokwandi revealed that he spent 10 days in the hospital and after several tests were ran on him, they found hole in his lungs and a mixture of water and blood on his chest.

Bakang Rankokwandi told SABC News that he is grateful to be alive and he wishes people understand the health implications of consuming these things.
